Darjeeling 2nd Flush, Goomtee Estate
This selection from the Goomtee Estate represents a classic example of the style, well balanced between fruity, floral and nutty elements. Darjeelings are standouts in the black tea category, renowned for their complex aromas and nuanced flavors. The flushes refer to the harvest: second flushes are the second hand-picking of the spring plants—in late April or early May—and the small leaves are fully withered and rolled so as to maximize oxidation.
Goomtee lies at 4,500 feet elevation, at the foothills of the Himalayas, and was established in 1899. This lot (DJ 49) has a full, earthy aroma, laced with deep flowery notes. Hints of toasted nuts and sweet grain are crowned with a spicy orange note, reminiscent of a clove-studded pomander—making it a beautiful cup for any time of day.
