Darjeeling 1st Flush, Gopaldhara Estate

Eagerly anticipated each spring, Darjeeling First Flush is the initial harvest from plants that have lain dormant all winter. The mountainous region, at the foothills of the Himalayans, has long been celebrated for its dramatic landscape and distinctive teas. For this unique style, the buds and tender new growth are carefully hand-picked, and then undergo an unusual hard withering process to rapidly reduce moisture content in the leaves. This produces the tea's characteristic nuanced fragrances and a light, bright taste.

Founded in 1881, the Gopaldhara Estate lies at the western edge of the region, with elevations from 5,500 to 7,000 feet. This lot (DJ 8) is comprised primarily of the AV2 clonal, which contributes a rich floral profile; fragrances of winter squash and honey open to a cup with a soothing, heavy texture and lingering sweet taste.

Summery Cocktail of a Tea

I'm beginning to explore first flushes in my continued search for that perfect balance between green and black and this Gopaldhara 2024 is extremely pleasing. I brewed in a gaiwan for a little under one minute and the 2nd steeping was even better. This may seem an odd comparison but I kept thinking of a Pimm's Cup - sweet cucumber with a touch of lemon. Perfect for a summer morning.

Excellent Darjeeling 1st Flush

I prepare it using 3 grams, in 6 oz cup, starting at 2-3 minutes, 2 steeping's.
Wonderful full-body taste and well-flavored.
